The American Zen Association was incorporated in Louisiana in 1983 by Robert Livingston Roshi (1933–2021), at the direction of his teacher, Taisen Deshimaru Roshi, to transmit authentic Soto Zen practice in the United States. It became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1984.
The AZA provides oversight and support to the New Orleans Zen Temple and affiliated dojos across the region, and participates in the publishing of rare and important English-language texts from teachers in the lineage.
